A barrel of oil measured in hot West Texas summer ambient temperatures contains fewer mass hydrocarbon molecules than the same physical volume measured at freezing winter temperatures. To establish an equitable global pricing basis, petroleum custody transfers are standardized to a benchmark temperature of 60°F (15.56°C).

Hydrometer floats higher in cold, denser liquid. However, the API gravity scale is inverted: higher API numbers represent lighter, less dense liquids (e.g. condensate is 55° API; water is 10° API; heavy asphalt is <10° API). When warm oil cools to 60°F, its density rises and its true °API drops.
