Why does API gravity decrease as temperature decreases to 60°F?
Hydrometer floats higher in cold, denser liquid. However, the API gravity scale is inverted: higher API numbers represent lighter, less dense liquids (e.g. condensate is 55° API; water is 10° API; heavy asphalt is <10° API). When warm oil cools to 60°F, its density rises and its true °API drops.

What is the glass hydrometer thermal expansion correction?
Hydrometers are calibrated at exactly 60°F. When used in hot oil, the glass bulb slightly expands, altering the displaced volume and introducing a tiny measurement bias. The standard API glass correction accounts for this expansion: HYC = 1 - 0.0000127 × (T - 60).
How does VCF impact petroleum billing?
