In friable, shallow, or gassy coals, hydraulic fracturing can crush the coal into fine powder, embed proppant, or accidentally fracture into bounding water-bearing sandstones. Multilateral drilling provides massive in-seam contact without pumping proppant or risking water breakthrough.
