What is the difference between MCSF and MCTF?
MCTF (Minimum Continuous Thermal Flow) is the lowest flow required to prevent the pumped liquid from boiling inside the pump casing due to dissipated impeller horsepower. MCSF (Minimum Continuous Stable Flow) is higher than MCTF and prevents mechanical vibration, shaft deflection, and severe suction recirculation cavitation.
Why does a high Suction Specific Speed (Nss) increase minimum flow?
Impellers engineered for very low NPSH requirements (Nss > 11,000) have large impeller eye diameters and aggressive inlet vane angles. While beneficial at BEP, at partial flow these wide inlet passages promote heavy flow backflow and suction recirculation vortices, raising the MCSF to 50% or more of BEP flow.
How does an automatic recirculation valve (ARC) protect the pump?
An ARC (Automatic Recirculation Valve) monitors process discharge flow. When the process demand drops below the pump MCSF threshold, the internal spring-loaded check disc modulates open a bypass port to return liquid back to the suction vessel or deaerator, guaranteeing safe minimum flow at all times.
