What skewness threshold is considered acceptable in ANSYS Fluent?
ANSYS recommends keeping maximum cell skewness below 0.85 for tetrahedral elements and below 0.80 for hexahedra. Any cells with skewness > 0.95 should be eliminated before solving.
Why are high aspect ratio cells acceptable in boundary layers?
In boundary layers, velocity gradients are extreme in the wall-normal direction (dy) but very mild in the streamwise direction (dx). High aspect ratio quad/prism cells (AR up to 100:1) accurately resolve the normal gradient without wasting millions of unnecessary cells along the stream.
What is non-orthogonality in OpenFOAM checkMesh?
Non-orthogonality measures the angle between the vector connecting two cell centroids and the face normal vector. Angles above 70° require non-orthogonal corrector iterations in fvSchemes, and angles > 85° can cause divergence.
