Backyard Poultry Spacing Standards
Overcrowding is the primary trigger for feather pecking, vent cannibalism, egg eating, and respiratory disease in backyard chickens.
- Indoor Coop Space: Minimum 4 square feet per bird for standard breeds (2 sq ft for bantams, 8-10 sq ft if winter snowbound).
- Outdoor Run Space: Minimum 8 to 10 square feet per bird.
- Roosting Bar: 10 to 12 linear inches per bird on a 2x4 with the wide 4-inch side facing up so chickens can sit on their feet to prevent frostbitten toes in winter.
- Nesting Boxes: One 12" × 12" nesting box per 3 to 4 laying hens.

Why do chickens need a 2x4 with the wide side up for roosting?
Unlike wild songbirds that grip round branches, chickens prefer a flat surface. In winter, sitting on a flat 2x4 allows their breast feathers to drape over their feet, protecting toes from frostbite.
Should nesting boxes be higher or lower than the roost bar?
Always place nesting boxes lower than the roosting bar. Chickens naturally seek the highest point to sleep; if nest boxes are higher, they will sleep in them and poop on the eggs.
How high should roost bars be mounted?
