Why can condensate return lines never be sized as simple water pipes?
When high-pressure condensate discharges through a steam trap into a lower pressure header, 5% to 15% immediately flashes into steam. Because steam has up to 1,000 times greater specific volume than water, over 95% of the pipe volume is occupied by high-velocity vapor, causing massive backpressure if sized as liquid.
What is the recommended design velocity for two-phase condensate lines?
Recommended velocity is 2,000 to 3,000 ft/min (approx. 33 to 50 ft/s). Velocities above 4,500 ft/min cause severe impingement erosion at pipe elbows and fittings, while velocities below 1,500 ft/min are oversized and unnecessarily expensive.
How does undersized condensate piping cause water hammer?
In undersized lines, high-velocity flash steam shears liquid along the bottom into moving slugs. When a liquid slug encounters a tee or elbow, the rapid deceleration of dense water creates violent shock waves (hydraulic water hammer) that rupture pipe joints and hangers.
