Why Recirculation Pumps Require Surprisingly Tiny GPM

A common mistake made by homeowners and novice plumbers is installing an oversized circulator pump (e.g. Taco 007 rated for 15 GPM). Recirculation pumps do not supply fixture flow (the city water pressure does that). Their only job is to replace the thermal heat lost through the pipe walls while fixtures sit idle:

In a typical 150-foot insulated residential loop with a 10°F drop, the required flow rate is only 0.25 to 0.50 GPM!

Dedicated Return vs. Under-Sink Thermal Bypass
