Wet Limestone-Gypsum FGD Chemistry

Wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers neutralize acidic sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) gas generated from coal and heavy oil combustion by spraying an aqueous slurry of pulverized limestone ($CaCO_3$). Forced in-situ air oxidation converts the intermediate calcium sulfite into commercial-grade synthetic gypsum ($CaSO_4 cdot 2H_2O$) used in drywall manufacturing.

Overall Chemical Reaction

CaCO₃ + SO₂ + ½ O₂ + 2 H₂O → CaSO₄·2H₂O (Gypsum) + CO₂
