Fluidization Regimes & Ergun Mechanics
Fluidization occurs when an upward-flowing gas exerts a drag force equal to the net submerged weight of a solid granular bed. At this critical superficial velocity ($U_{mf}$), solid particles become suspended and the bed displays liquid-like fluid behavior.
Operating Window ($U_{mf} < U_{op} < U_t$)
The operable superficial velocity range is bounded on the low end by $U_{mf}$ (below which the bed is defluidized and packed) and on the high end by the terminal settling velocity $U_t$ (above which particles are violently entrained and carried out of the reactor into cyclone separators).
