Why Shelf Depth Multiplies Pullout Force

When you place heavy objects on a deep shelf hanging from a French cleat, the shelf acts as a class-1 lever. The bottom heel of the hanger bracket presses into the wall, while the top of the cleat attempts to pry outward from the wall:
