Why Shelf Depth Multiplies Pullout Force
When you place heavy objects on a deep shelf hanging from a French cleat, the shelf acts as a class-1 lever. The bottom heel of the hanger bracket presses into the wall, while the top of the cleat attempts to pry outward from the wall:
If you build an 18-inch deep shelf with only a 3-inch tall hanger bracket, the pullout force on the wall screws is 3 times greater than the weight of the items on the shelf! Always build the vertical backing bracket at least half as tall as the shelf depth.
Never Use Drywall Screws for French Cleats
Drywall screws are hardened and extremely brittle. When subjected to bending or shear loads from a heavy tool cabinet, drywall screw heads snap off with zero warning. Always use ductile, code-approved structural screws (#10 cabinet screws or 1/4" RSS structural lags) driven at least 1.5 inches into solid wood 2x4 studs.
