How Sheet Imposition & Gang-Run Sizing Work

Imposition optimization maximizes the number of finished pieces ("Up") arranged on a single press parent sheet to minimize paper trim scrap:

Standard Orientation Up = Floor(Printable Width / Cut Item Width) × Floor(Printable Height / Cut Item Height)

Grain Direction Compliance: When folding books, brochures, or carton packaging, paper grain direction must run parallel to the fold line. If an imposition layout yields 10-up rotated but forces the paper grain across the fold, thick coated covers will crack and tear along the spine.

What is a "gripper margin" on an offset printing press?

Mechanical press cylinders have a row of spring-loaded steel finger clamps (grippers) that snatch the leading edge of each paper sheet to pull it through the print units. This 0.375" to 0.500" strip cannot receive ink and must be factored out of printable dimensions.

What is gang-run printing?

Gang-run printing combines multiple independent customer jobs sharing the same paper stock and color profile onto a single parent sheet (e.g. 32 different business cards or 8 different flyers on a 28" × 40" sheet). This splits plate makeready costs across multiple clients, slashing prices.

Why is a double-cut gutter needed between bleeds?

When printed designs have color extending off the edge (bleeds), guillotine paper cutters cannot make a single knife cut between two adjacent pieces without leaving a sliver of the neighboring color. A 1/8" to 1/4" double-cut gutter allows the knife to trim away two clean slivers.
