Fuel gas piping systems must be sized so that fuel is delivered to every appliance at sufficient pressure under full simultaneous firing demand. In standard residential natural gas systems, gas arrives from the meter at approximately 0.5 PSI (14 inches water column) or 7 inches w.c., and national codes (NFPA 54 / ANSI Z223.1 and IFGC) permit a maximum pressure loss of only 0.5 inches w.c. across the entire piping tree.
The NFPA 54 Longest-Run Sizing Procedure
Plumbing and mechanical inspectors mandate the Longest-Run Method:
- Find the Furthest Appliance: Measure the continuous distance from the meter/regulator to the single appliance farthest away.
- Add Fitting Allowances: Add equivalent length for all 90° elbows, tees, and shutoff valves (a standard rule of thumb is +20% to +30% equivalent length).
- Lock the Length Column: In the NFPA 54 capacity table, select the row corresponding to this total longest distance. You must use this exact same distance row for sizing all main trunk lines and branching runs, regardless of how close an intermediate appliance is.
Natural Gas vs. Propane (LP) Differences
Propane contains roughly 2,500 BTU per cubic foot, whereas natural gas contains roughly 1,000 BTU per cubic foot. Consequently, propane requires only 40% of the volumetric flow rate (CFH) to deliver the same amount of heat energy. However, propane is 2.5 times denser than natural gas (specific gravity 1.50 vs 0.60), causing slightly higher friction per unit volume. The higher energy density overwhelmingly wins out, allowing propane to use significantly smaller pipe sizes for equal BTU ratings.

Why does my tankless water heater require a 3/4" or 1" dedicated gas line?
Tankless water heaters fire at 180,000 to 199,000 BTU/hr instantaneously. A typical 1/2" black iron pipe can only deliver about 70,000 to 100,000 BTU/hr at 30 to 50 feet. Undersized piping causes gas starvation, flame roll-out errors, and error codes (like Noritz/Rinnai Code 11).
Can I use CSST (yellow corrugated tubing) instead of black iron pipe?
