Frequently Asked Questions
What is the purpose of steam attemperation?
Attemperators (desuperheaters) inject high-purity water directly into the steam pipe between superheater stages to protect downstream steam turbine blades and thick-wall headers from thermal overtemperature.
Why must attemperator spray water have boiler feedwater purity?
Because the spray water flashes completely into the main steam stream, any dissolved solids or silica in the water carry over directly into the steam turbine, causing turbine blade fouling and erosion.
What is thermal fatigue cracking in attemperator liners?
Unvaporized water droplets striking the hot pipe wall create extreme cyclic thermal shock. Desuperheaters incorporate internal thermal sleeves (liners) to prevent cold water droplets from contacting pressure boundary walls.
