Why does a hydraulic cylinder have different push and pull force?

A standard single-rod cylinder pushes using the entire blind-end bore area (A = π·D²/4). When retracting, the cylinder rod occupies space inside the barrel, leaving only the smaller annular ring area (A = π·(D² - d²)/4) for oil pressure to act upon, reducing pull force and increasing retract speed.

What is a regenerative cylinder circuit and when is it used?

A regenerative circuit connects the rod-end port directly to the blind-end port during extension through a directional valve. Oil leaving the rod end re-enters the cap end, increasing advance speed drastically at the expense of thrust. It is commonly used on wood splitters and press rapid-traverse strokes.

What is cylinder column buckling and when must it be checked?

When long-stroke cylinders push high compressive loads, Euler column buckling can cause the slender piston rod to bow or snap. Cylinder manufacturers specify stop tubes or larger rod diameters whenever the extended stroke exceeds 10 to 15 times the rod diameter.
