Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I get a double-tracked or split knurl?
Double tracking occurs when the blank circumference is out of sync with the wheel pitch by half a tooth (e.g. 50.5 pitches). As the workpiece completes its first revolution, the wheel teeth land directly on top of the previously formed crests, splitting them into ugly double lines. Turning the blank to the exact integer tracking diameter calculated above eliminates this issue.
How should I start a knurling pass on a manual lathe?
Angle the knurling tool 2° to 3° toward the headstock so only the leading edge of the wheels bites first. Bring the lathe to low speed (100-200 RPM), flood with cutting oil, and aggressively force the tool to depth within the first 1-2 revolutions before engaging power carriage feed.
What is the difference between Circular Pitch and Diametral Pitch in knurling?
