A widespread misconception in machine shop practice is that the tang at the back of a Morse taper is meant to drive cutting tools. In reality, 100% of the operating torque in a healthy machine tool should be transmitted purely by conical taper surface friction. The tang is primarily an ejection surface for drift keys.
