When an industrial boiler fires, it consumes massive quantities of air (approx. 10 to 12 cubic feet of air per 1,000 BTU input). If fresh air louvres are undersized or blocked, the room goes into severe negative pressure, starving the burner of oxygen, creating toxic carbon monoxide, and backdrafting chimney exhaust into occupied spaces.

What is the NFPA 54 / ASME CSD-1 rule for combustion air openings?

For single direct openings communicating with the outdoors, NFPA 54 requires a minimum of 1 square inch of net free area per 3,000 to 4,000 BTU/hr of total boiler input rating. For mechanical supply fans, a minimum of 0.35 CFM per 1,000 BTU/hr is mandated.
