Frequently Asked Questions
How does a Pelton turbine convert hydraulic potential energy into mechanical work?
A Pelton turbine is an impulse machine. High-pressure water from the penstock accelerates through needle injector nozzles into atmospheric-pressure high-velocity water jets (V = Cv * sqrt(2gH)). The jets strike split-cup shaped buckets mounted on the rim of the runner wheel. The center splitter ridge divides each jet into two streams, deflecting them backwards by approximately 165° to 170°, transferring virtually all kinetic energy to the wheel rim.
Why is the jet-to-wheel diameter ratio (m = D1 / d_jet) critical?
The ratio m governs the physical packaging and hydraulics of the buckets. If m < 8, the bucket cups are too large relative to the wheel radius, causing physical overlap, severe mechanical stress at the bucket root, and water exiting one bucket to hit the back of the preceding bucket. If m > 18, the runner becomes excessively bulky and expensive relative to the power delivered.
Why are vertical shaft configurations favored for multi-jet Pelton units?
Horizontal shaft Pelton turbines are generally limited to 1 or 2 nozzles to avoid spent water falling back onto the spinning runner. Vertical shaft Pelton turbines can accommodate 4 to 6 injector nozzles spaced uniformly around the circumference, discharging water downward into an open tailrace pit without splashing interference, quadrupling power density.
