Why does ASME B31.1 limit pipe support sag to 0.10 inches?
Limiting mid-span deflection to 0.10 inches (2.5 mm) prevents the pipe from sagging below the level of the support points. In steam and wet gas systems, sag pockets pool liquid condensate, which creates violent liquid slug water hammer when high-pressure steam rushes through the line.

A 6-inch pipe full of water weighs 31.5 lb/ft compared to only 19.0 lb/ft empty or filled with steam. Consequently, water piping spans must be spaced closer (typically 17 ft max) compared to vapor lines (up to 21 ft max).
