ASME B31.8 / B31.4 Pipeline Hydrostatic Testing
Before commissioning, transmission pipelines undergo an 8-hour or 24-hour hydrostatic strength and leak test at $125% - 150%$ of Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure (MAOP). Because water has a high bulk modulus ($K_w approx 319,000 ext{ psi}$), small ground temperature shifts produce dramatic pressure swings ($approx 20 - 30 ext{ psi}/^circ ext{F}$) that can easily be mistaken for pipeline leaks.
