The 300 DPI Myth on Large Format: Designers often crash their computers trying to export 10-foot banners at 300 PPI. From 10 feet away, the human eye cannot resolve anything sharper than 30 PPI! A 30-foot highway billboard viewed from 50 feet away is universally printed at only 10 to 15 PPI.

What is the difference between PPI, LPI, and DPI?

PPI (Pixels Per Inch) measures digital image pixel density in Photoshop. LPI (Lines Per Inch) measures the physical halftone grid frequency of ink dots on an offset printing press. DPI (Dots Per Inch) measures the physical laser/inkjet droplet output resolution of the plate recorder or printer.

Why is 300 PPI considered the standard for desktop printing?

Commercial sheetfed presses traditionally print at 150 LPI. Under Nyquist-Shannon sampling theory, prepress requires 2 samples per halftone dot (Quality Factor 2.0) to prevent pixelation artifacts: 150 LPI × 2.0 = 300 PPI.

Can Photoshop "resample" an image to make a low-res photo look sharp?

No. Upscaling a low-resolution 72 PPI web screenshot to 300 PPI in Photoshop simply duplicates or interpolates fuzzy pixels. It does not invent missing optical camera detail, resulting in a blurry, muddy print.
