The #1 Mistake in Sandblasting: Undersized Air Compressors
Sandblasting is the single most air-hungry process in any workshop. While a 1/2" impact wrench consumes 5 CFM intermittently, an abrasive blast nozzle is a continuous open orifice dumping compressed air at supersonic speeds.
The 4-CFM-per-Horsepower Rule
Industrial air compressors produce approximately 3.5 to 4.0 CFM of Free Air Delivery (FAD) per electric motor horsepower at 90 to 100 PSI. A standard #3 (3/16") blast nozzle demands nearly 40 CFM at 90 PSI, meaning a 10 Horsepower continuous-duty compressor is strictly required. Attempting to run a 3/16" nozzle on a 3 HP hobby compressor causes pressure to crash to 30 PSI in seconds!
Nozzle Wear Enlargement
Abrasive particles accelerate through the nozzle at over 400 miles per hour, eroding the interior carbide bore. When a #3 (3/16") nozzle wears open to #4 (1/4"), its air consumption jumps by over 100% (from 38 CFM to 80 CFM)! Regularly check nozzle bore diameters with drill shank gauges.
