Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Principles

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) converts toxic nitrogen oxides ($NO_x = NO + NO_2$) into harmless atmospheric nitrogen ($N_2$) and water vapor by reacting with injected ammonia over a titanium-vanadium ($V_2O_5 / TiO_2$) honeycomb or plate catalyst.

Ammonium Bisulfate (ABS) Danger

Any unreacted ammonia (known as ammonia slip) that passes through the catalyst reacts with flue gas sulfur trioxide ($SO_3$) at temperatures below $400^circ ext{F} - 450^circ ext{F}$ to form sticky, corrosive liquid ammonium bisulfate ($NH_4HSO_4$), which glues fly ash to downstream rotary air preheater baskets.
