Severe slugging is an unstable cyclic terrain phenomenon where liquid accumulates at a downward-sloping riser base. As liquid blocks gas flow, a dense liquid column fills the vertical riser until upstream gas compresses sufficiently to blow the massive liquid slug violently into topsides separators.

What is the Bøe stability criterion?

Proposed by Morten Bøe, the dimensionless parameter compares the gas volume expansion capacity in the upstream flowline against the hydrostatic liquid head of the riser. When Π > 1.0, gas can continuously lift liquid without cyclic blockage.
