The Physics of Solar Panel Cold-Weather Voltage Surges

Photovoltaic silicon cells have a negative temperature coefficient of voltage (typically (-0.26%) to (-0.35% / ^circ ext{C})). When temperature drops, the semiconductor bandgap widens, dramatically increasing the open-circuit voltage ((V_{ ext{oc}})) produced by the panel.

The Catastrophic Winter Inverter Blowout

If an installer designs a solar string based strictly on the 25°C (77°F) STC nameplate rating (e.g. 14 panels × 40V = 560V into a 600V inverter), the system will work fine all summer. But on a clear, frigid January morning at -15°C (5°F), panel voltage jumps by over 11% to 625 Volts!

The instant the sun strikes the array before the inverter begins drawing current, the 625V open-circuit surge destroys the inverter's input electrolytic capacitors and IGBT bridge, voiding the warranty!

NEC 690.7 Voltage Correction Formula

Voc_max = Voc_stc × [ 1 + (Temp_Coeff_pct / 100) × (T_cold - 25°C) ]

Frequently Asked Questions

What cold temperature should I use for my location?

Use the ASHRAE "Extreme Annual Mean Minimum Design Dry Bulb Temperature" for your nearest weather station, or check your local building permitting department's official design table.

Why does Voc spike highest when the inverter is NOT producing power?

Open-circuit voltage occurs when no current is flowing (e.g. before the inverter wakes up in the morning, or during a grid power outage). Once the inverter turns on and draws power, array voltage drops down to Vmp (Maximum Power Voltage).

Does snow reflection increase solar panel voltage?

Snow reflection (albedo) dramatically increases current (Amps) and irradiance (up to 1,300 W/m²), but voltage is primarily driven by cell temperature and is governed by the logarithmic diode equation.
