What is Amplifier Damping Factor?
When an audio signal stops, a heavy subwoofer or woofer cone continues oscillating due to inertia, acting like an electrical generator sending back-EMF voltage down the wire into the amplifier. Damping Factor (DF) represents the amplifier's ability to short-circuit this back-EMF and stop unwanted woofer ringing instantly.
The Cable Resistance Bottleneck
While an amplifier might boast a marketing spec of (DF = 500) ((R_{ ext{out}} = 8 / 500 = 0.016,Omega)), that internal resistance is placed in direct series with the round-trip resistance of the speaker cable ((R_{ ext{wire}})):
If you connect a 4-ohm speaker through 50 feet of thin 18 AWG wire ((R_{ ext{wire}} = 0.64,Omega)), your $2,000 amplifier's effective damping factor collapses from 500 down to less than 6! The woofer will ring flabbily on kick drums and bass lines.
Beware of Cheap CCA (Copper-Clad Aluminum) Wire
Many cheap online "speaker cables" are made of CCA (aluminum wire coated with a microscopically thin copper wash). Aluminum has 60% higher electrical resistance than pure Oxygen-Free Copper (OFC). A 16 AWG CCA wire performs as poorly as a thin 18 or 19 AWG pure copper wire!
