Strapping Formula & Volumetric Derivations

  1. Cylinder Geometric Factor:
    For a vertical cylindrical tank with diameter D (feet):
    Cross-sectional Area: A = π × (D / 2)² (sq ft)
    Since 1 cubic foot = 0.1781076 standard petroleum barrels (bbl = 42 gal):
    Barrels Per Foot = A × 0.1781076 = 0.139886 × D²
    Barrels Per Inch (BPI) = (0.139886 × D²) / 12 ≈ 0.0116572 × D²
  2. Gross Observed Volume (GOV):
    GOV = Total Liquid Gauge Height (inches) × BPI
  3. Free Water Deduction:
    Produced water drops to the bottom datum due to higher specific gravity. The water cut depth is measured using water-finding paste on the plumb bob:

What is the difference between innage and outage (ullage) gauging?

Innage gauging measures the physical depth of liquid from the bottom datum plate up to the liquid surface. Outage (or ullage) gauging measures the empty distance from the top reference point on the gauge hatch down to the liquid surface. Innage is preferred for high-accuracy custody transfer on flat or datum-plated tanks.

How is Barrels Per Inch (BPI) calculated for a tank?

BPI is calculated from cylinder geometry: Area = π × (D/2)² ft². One cu ft equals 0.1781 barrels (42 gal/bbl). Dividing by 12 inches per foot gives BPI = 0.011657 × Diameter². For a 60-foot diameter tank, each inch equals 0.011657 × 3600 ≈ 41.96 BBL.

What is BS&W and why is it deducted?

BS&W stands for Basic Sediment and Water. It represents minute water droplets and microscopic sediment solids dispersed in suspension within the crude oil. Buyers do not pay for water and sand; hence it is measured via ASTM D4007 centrifuge testing and deducted from the gross invoice volume.

What is the safe filling height for bulk storage tanks?
