The Sump Pump Safety Margin Rule (1.5x)
Groundwater flows into basement sump pits through perforated perimeter French drains during torrential storms. To guarantee that your basement never floods, the pump's discharge rate at your actual vertical head must exceed maximum storm inflow by at least 50% (a 1.5x safety multiplier).
The Danger of Short-Cycling
A common mistake is putting a tiny float travel (e.g. 3 inches) in a narrow pit. If the pump runs for only 8 seconds, stops for 10 seconds, and starts again, the electric motor switches on 150 times per hour! Rapid on/off motor cycling overheats the starting capacitor and burns out the mechanical switch within a single wet season. Set your float travel to at least 6 to 8 inches so the pump runs for at least 15 to 25 seconds per cycle.
1/3 HP vs 1/2 HP Pump Sizing
- 1/3 HP Pump: Delivers approx 25 to 30 GPM at 10 ft of head. Suitable for average homes with moderate water tables and short discharge runs.
- 1/2 HP Pump: Delivers approx 38 to 48 GPM at 10 ft of head. Essential for high water tables, houses with full basements, or discharge pipes exceeding 50 feet.
