A common misconception among beginner astronomers is that a telescope's power is measured by magnification. In reality, a telescope's true power is its aperture (light gathering capacity). Magnification is entirely variable and determined by the eyepiece you insert.

The Critical Exit Pupil Rule

The exit pupil is the diameter of the cylinder of light emerging from the eyepiece into your eye. Because a dark-adapted human pupil can only dilate to approximately 5 to 7 mm, an exit pupil larger than 7 mm spills starlight outside your iris, wasting telescope aperture. Conversely, exit pupils under 0.5 mm create dim, blurry images dominated by eye floaters.

The theoretical maximum magnification for any telescope is approximately 50x per inch of aperture (or 2x per millimeter of aperture). For an 8-inch (203mm) telescope, the absolute limit is ~400x. However, Earth atmospheric turbulence ("seeing") typically limits practical viewing to 200x–250x on most nights.

How large is the Full Moon in true field of view?

The full moon spans approximately 0.5 degrees (30 arcminutes) in the night sky. A true field of view (TFOV) of 1.0 degree comfortably frames two full moon diameters with black sky around the edges.

What is the difference between AFOV and TFOV?

Apparent Field of View (AFOV) is the apparent width of the circle of view when you peer into the naked eyepiece (e.g. 52° for standard Plössl, 82° for ultra-wide). True Field of View (TFOV) is the actual patch of sky visible through the telescope (TFOV = AFOV / Magnification).
