Why is steam injected alongside oxygen in UCG?
Injecting pure oxygen without steam causes flame temperatures to spike past 1,600°C, melting coal ash into glassy liquid slag that covers reactive coal faces. Steam moderates the temperature via the endothermic water-gas reaction and boosts hydrogen yield.
What is Cold Gas Efficiency (CGE)?
Cold Gas Efficiency is the ratio of chemical energy contained in the cooled product syngas (Heating Value × Volume) to the chemical energy of the gasified coal fed into the system. High-performance UCG operations achieve CGE between 65% and 80%.
