What is the difference between SOTR and AOTR?

Standard Oxygen Transfer Rate (SOTR) is the mass transfer rate of oxygen into clean tap water at 20°C, zero dissolved oxygen, and 1 atmosphere barometric pressure. Actual Oxygen Transfer Rate (AOTR) is the real transfer rate into dirty wastewater under field conditions with active biological DO, elevated temperature, and surfactants.

Why does the Alpha factor (α) suppress fine-bubble aeration efficiency?

Alpha (α) is the ratio of gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient in wastewater compared to clean water (KLa_waste / KLa_clean). Surfactants, soaps, and dissolved organic molecules accumulate at the gas-liquid bubble interface, creating a stagnant boundary layer that impedes oxygen diffusion and drops fine-bubble alpha to between 0.50 and 0.70.

How does diffuser submergence depth improve oxygen transfer efficiency (SOTE)?

Deeper diffusers provide longer contact bubble residence time as air bubbles slowly rise through the liquid column to the surface. In addition, higher hydrostatic water pressure at the tank bottom increases oxygen partial pressure, driving greater oxygen flux into solution.
