Hydrogen has a laminar flame speed (over 200 cm/s) that is five to seven times faster than natural gas (methane ~38 cm/s). If fuel velocity drops, the flame can propagate backward into the premixing fuel nozzle ("flashback"), destroying the combustor basket.

Higher Heating Value (HHV) includes the latent heat of vaporization recovered when combustion water vapor condenses into liquid water (2.44 MJ/kg H2O). In industrial gas turbines and boilers, flue gas exits above 120°C, meaning water never condenses; hence LHV governs practical engineering efficiency.
