How to Size Combustion Air Openings (NFPA 54 / IFGC)
Fuel-burning gas appliances require a continuous supply of fresh oxygen to sustain complete combustion. Every 1,000 BTUs of natural gas requires approximately 30 cubic feet of air for combustion and draft dilution.
1. The 50 Cubic Feet Rule (Confined vs Unconfined)
Under the International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC) Section 304, an enclosure is classified as an Unconfined Space if its volume is at least:

2. The Two-Opening High/Low Method
Two permanent openings communicating directly with the outdoors must be provided:
- Upper Opening: Must commence within 12 inches of the ceiling (draws relief air and prevents heat buildup).
- Lower Opening: Must commence within 12 inches of the floor (supplies fresh heavy combustion air directly to the burner level).

Why do wood louvers require much larger openings than metal grilles?
Wooden louver slats are thick (typically 1/2" to 3/4"), blocking approximately 75% of the gross opening area (leaving only 25% net free area). Metal louvers have thin stamped blades that block only 25% of the opening (leaving 75% free area). A 50 sq in opening requires a 200 sq in wood grille vs a 67 sq in metal grille.
Can I use a single combustion air opening instead of two?
Yes! Under IFGC 304.6.2, appliances may be ventilated with a single permanent opening within 12" of the top of the enclosure, provided the opening communicates directly with the outdoors at a rate of 1 sq in per 3,000 BTU/hr.
Does a direct-vent (sealed combustion) furnace require combustion air louvers?
No! Direct-vent (two-pipe PVC) condensing furnaces draw 100% of their combustion air from the outdoors through a sealed intake pipe directly into the sealed burner box, completely bypassing room air.
What mesh size is allowed on outdoor combustion air intake hoods?
Intake hoods terminating outdoors must be fitted with corrosion-resistant screen mesh no smaller than 1/4" (6.4 mm) and no larger than 1/2" (12.7 mm). Fine insect screening (1/16") is strictly prohibited because dust and frost will quickly clog the mesh.
