Why do composite deck boards require 12" on-center joist spacing?

Composite and PVC decking boards are less rigid than natural 2x wood lumber. When installed at standard 16" on-center spacing, composite boards can sag or feel "spongy" under foot traffic, especially on hot sunny afternoons. Most composite manufacturers require 12" OC for diagonal layouts and recommend 12" OC for premium firmness.

Can I use 4x4 posts to support a multi-ply deck beam?

Under current IRC R507 codes, notched 6x6 posts are mandatory for beam attachment in almost all jurisdictions. 4x4 posts do not provide sufficient cross-sectional bearing area when notched to accept 2-ply or 3-ply beams and are prone to twisting.
