The through-dovetail is universally celebrated as the hallmark of master craftsmanship in fine furniture and cabinetry. Known for immense tensile mechanical strength and resistance to being pulled apart, dovetails rely on trapezoidal wedge interlocking supplemented by extensive long-grain-to-long-grain glue surface area.

1. Why Hardwoods Require a 1:8 Slope and Softwoods a 1:6 Slope

  • Hardwoods (1:8 Slope ≈ 7.1°): Hardwoods (oak, cherry, maple, walnut) are brittle and strong in cross-grain shear. A steep 1:8 slope prevents the narrow acute tips of the pins from shearing off when chopping baseline waste with a mallet and chisel.
  • Softwoods (1:6 Slope ≈ 9.5°): Softwoods (pine, fir, spruce) have compressible, spongy grain. A wider 1:6 angle provides greater wedge interlocking mechanical grip to prevent soft fibers from pulling through under load.

2. The +1/32" Proud Plane Rule

Never cut pins or tails flush with the board face. Always score your baseline gauge line approximately 1/32" (0.8 mm) deeper than board thickness ($T + 1/32"$). When assembled, the pins and tails will protrude slightly proud of the surface, allowing you to slice them dead-flush with a sharp hand plane for a glassy joint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I cut pins first or tails first?

This is the classic woodworking debate! The "tails first" method is favored by most hand tool woodworkers because marking pins from completed tails is mechanically easier with the tail board resting flat on the pin board end-grain. However, both methods produce flawless joints when marked with a razor-thin marking knife.

Why should I leave at least 1/4" half-pins at the outside edges?

The outside corners of a drawer box experience high handling stress. Having substantial half-pins (at least 1/4" to 3/8" wide) prevents the fragile outer grain corners of the box from splitting off during assembly or clamp pressure.

What is the narrowest pin width I can cut?

The narrowest practical pin size is governed by your narrowest bench chisel. Traditional English cabinetmakers cut ultra-skinny "London style" pins as narrow as 1/16" or 1/8", requiring a dedicated fish-tail chisel to clear the tight acute corner baseline waste.

Can I cut dovetails on plywood?

Dovetails are engineered strictly for solid wood grain. In plywood, alternating veneer plies have weak cross-grain glue shear, causing the plies to splinter and delaminate during sawing and chopping.
