Box joints (also called finger joints) provide exceptional mechanical strength and glue surface area for drawers, jewelry boxes, tool chests, and speaker cabinets. However, the most frustrating flaw in box joint construction is the partial edge finger—where the blade leaves a paper-thin sliver at the edge of the board.

Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical Finger Layouts

A box joint can be laid out in two distinct configurations:

  • Symmetrical (Odd Segment Count): Board A begins and ends with a solid pin (e.g., 5 pins, 4 sockets = 9 total segments). Board B begins and ends with a socket (e.g., 4 pins, 5 sockets). This yields a balanced, visually pleasing edge on top and bottom.
  • Asymmetrical (Even Segment Count): Board A has a pin on the left and a socket on the right (e.g., 8 total segments). This permits cutting identical boards on one setup by rotating them, but one corner edge will reveal an end-grain pin next to long-grain edge.

Dado Blade and Jig Calibration Tips

When cutting box joints on a table saw or router table using a stepping key jig:

  1. Set Blade Height Slightly Proud: Set the dado blade depth approximately 0.015" to 0.030" (0.4 to 0.8 mm) deeper than the board's thickness. After glue-up, the end-grain pins will stand proud and can be sanded or hand-planed completely flush with the sides.
  2. The Key Spacing Rule: The spacing between the blade and the indexing pin must equal the blade kerf exactly. If the joint is too tight to assemble without hammer bruising, shift the indexing pin a few thousandths of an inch away from the blade. If the joint is sloppy, shift the pin slightly closer.

Why do my fingers end up with a tiny sliver on the final cut?

A partial finger occurs when the board width is not an exact integer multiple of your dado blade kerf. To fix this, either use this calculator to adjust the board width on your jointer/table saw before cutting, or adjust the finger width using a custom router bit.

How deep should I set my table saw blade for finger joints?

Set the blade depth equal to the thickness of the mating board PLUS 1/64" (0.015" to 0.020"). Having the pins stick out slightly proud allows you to sand or plane the joint perfectly flat after the glue dries.

Can I cut box joints with a standard table saw blade without a dado set?

Yes! A standard 1/8" (0.125") kerf blade can cut 1/8" fingers in thin stock (like 1/4" drawer boxes) with a simple screw-advance box joint jig. For wider fingers, make multiple overlapping passes.
