In metalworking, drill bit rotation must match the linear surface speed at which the outer cutting lips can shave material without friction welding or overheating. The classic Surface Feet per Minute formula is:

RPM = (SFM × 12) / (π × Diameter_in_inches) ≈ (SFM × 3.82) / Diameter

For metric cutting speeds ((V_c) in meters per minute):

RPM = (Vc × 1000) / (π × Diameter_in_mm)

Why Stainless Steel Destroys Drill Bits

Austenitic stainless steels (304, 316) work-harden instantly when subjected to rubbing without cutting. If you spin a drill bit too fast or hesitate on feed pressure for even 2 seconds, the friction creates an impenetrable case-hardened crust that dulls standard HSS cutting edges into glowing red slag. Run slow (40 SFM), push hard, and flood with cutting oil!

Why should small drill bits spin fast and large drill bits spin slow?

Because surface speed is proportional to diameter. The outer perimeter of a 1-inch drill travels over 3 inches of metal per revolution, while a 1/8-inch drill travels less than 0.4 inches. A 1-inch drill spinning at 2,000 RPM creates catastrophic rim overheating.

What is peck drilling and when is it necessary?

Peck drilling is the technique of repeatedly retracting the drill bit completely out of the hole to evacuate metal chips and allow cutting fluid to reach the tip. You should peck drill whenever hole depth exceeds 3 to 4 times the drill bit diameter.

Can I use a regular twist drill bit in acrylic or Plexiglas?

Standard twist drills have a 118° or 135° point that grabs and shatters acrylic when breaking through. For clean holes, grind a slight flat on the cutting lips (zero rake angle) or use specialized 60° plastic drill bits at moderate RPM.
