How MIG Voltage and Wire Feed Speed Relate

Unlike Stick or TIG welding where amperage is set on the machine dial, a Constant Voltage (CV) MIG power supply allows you to set Voltage and Wire Feed Speed (WFS).

Amperage is determined directly by wire feed speed: feeding wire faster forces the power supply to deliver more amperage to burn it off at the set voltage.

Base Current Rule: 1 Amp per 0.001" steel thickness
Voltage sets puddle width and flatness; WFS sets penetration depth and bead height.

75% Argon / 25% CO2 (C25) is the industry standard for short-circuit MIG on mild steel, providing smooth arc stability with minimal spatter.

What is the standard wire stick-out distance?

Maintain a 1/4" to 3/8" wire stick-out (contact tip to work distance). Excessive stick-out cools the arc and loses gas shielding coverage.

Can .030 wire weld 1/4" plate in a single pass?

Yes, running near maximum machine output (~180-200 Amps). However, .035" wire is preferred for 1/4" and thicker plate to achieve faster deposition and deeper root penetration.
