Drip irrigation delivers water directly to plant root zones with over 90% water efficiency. However, low-pressure micro-irrigation systems are strictly governed by pipe friction loss. The most common DIY failure is connecting too many emitters to a single line, causing severe pressure starvation at the far end of the run.
The 240 GPH Rule for 1/2-Inch Poly Tubing
Standard 1/2" blank poly tubing (0.600" to 0.700" inside diameter) can reliably carry up to 200 to 240 Gallons Per Hour (GPH) (approx 3.3 to 4.0 GPM). If your emitters demand more than 240 GPH:
- Water velocity exceeds 5 feet per second, creating severe dynamic friction drop.
- Emitters near the spigot emit full flow, while emitters at the end trickle or stop completely.
- Barbed fittings and emitter stakes pop loose from pressure imbalances.
Pressure Compensating (PC) vs Non-PC Emitters
For tubing runs exceeding 100 feet or zones with elevation slopes, always install Pressure Compensating (PC) emitters. PC emitters feature a flexible silicone diaphragm that maintains a calibrated flow rate across a wide supply range (10 to 50 PSI).
