How to Calculate Filament Remaining Length by Weight

Running out of filament at 95% of a 28-hour 3D print is every maker's worst nightmare. Slicers (OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio) display the exact grams and meters a model requires before printing. By subtracting the empty spool tare weight from your scale reading, you can determine if your spool has enough filament to complete the job.

The Cylinder Volume Equation

Weight = π × (d / 2)^2 × Length × Density
Length (m) = Weight (g) / (Cross-Section Area × Density)

For standard 1.75mm PLA, one meter of filament weighs almost exactly 2.98 to 3.0 grams. A brand-new 1 kg spool contains roughly 335 meters of filament.

Material Density Differences

ABS (1.04 g/cm³) is 16% lighter than PLA (1.24 g/cm³). That means 1 kg of ABS provides almost 400 meters of filament, giving you significantly more physical parts per spool than dense PLA or PETG.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an empty 1kg filament spool's average weight?

Standard injection-molded plastic spools typically weigh between 200g and 250g. Lightweight eco-cardboard spools weigh between 125g and 145g.

How many meters of 1.75mm PLA are in a full 1kg roll?

A full 1,000 gram spool of 1.75mm PLA has approximately 335 meters (1,100 feet) of filament.

Does moisture absorption affect spool weight?

Yes. Hydrophilic filaments like Nylon (PA) and TPU can absorb 2% to 4% moisture by weight if left exposed to ambient room humidity, adding 20g to 40g of water weight to the spool.
