The Huge Speed Difference: Wood vs Metal Cutting
One of the most dangerous workshop mistakes is trying to cut steel on a standard wood bandsaw. Wood saws run fast ((sim 3,000 ext{ SFM})) to eject sawdust cleanly. Mild steel requires cutting speeds of 100 to 200 SFM!
Attempting to cut steel at 3,000 SFM strips every tooth off a high-carbon bandsaw blade in less than 3 seconds due to intense localized friction melting.
The Rule of 3 to 10 Teeth in the Cut
To avoid tooth stripping, you must have at least 3 teeth engaged in the workpiece thickness at all times. For 1/8" sheet metal, use 24 TPI. For thick 6" timber resawing, use coarse 2 or 3 TPI blades with massive gullets to clear sawdust.
