How Gutter and Downspout Sizing Works
Gutter capacity is governed by the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association (SMACNA) design standards. Wind pushes windward raindrops faster onto steep pitches, requiring a pitch factor:
Drainage Area = Length × Width × Pitch Factor
Adjusted Drainage Area = Drainage Area × (Rainfall Intensity in/hr / 5.0)
A standard 5" K-Style gutter handles up to 5,500 sq ft of adjusted drainage area. Roofs exceeding this threshold require 6" K-Style gutters, which hold 40% more water volume.
