What is pressure thrust in a bellows expansion joint?
A metal bellows is flexible in the axial direction and cannot transmit longitudinal tension. Internal fluid pressure acts against the cross-sectional mean area of the bellows convolutions, generating a massive axial piston force (F_thrust = P · A_eff) pushing the pipe ends apart.
What happens if you use an intermediate anchor instead of a main anchor for an unrestrained joint?
Intermediate anchors are only rated for spring forces (~500 lbs). If an unrestrained expansion joint is installed without a main anchor capable of holding the full pressure thrust (often 10,000 to 80,000 lbs), the anchor will violently fail, blowing the joint open and causing immediate pipe rupture.
What is the EJMA pipe guide spacing rule?
The Expansion Joint Manufacturers Association (EJMA) requires the first alignment guide to be placed within 4 pipe diameters of the bellows, and the second guide within 14 pipe diameters. This prevents column squirm and buckling of the pressurized pipe.
