A plumbing P-trap holds a 2" to 4" deep water seal that physically blocks deadly methane, sewer odors, and airborne bacteria from drifting out of city sewers into your home. The trap arm is the section of horizontal pipe connecting the trap weir to the vertical vent stack fitting (sanitary tee).

2. Why Too Much Slope Causes Trap Failure

Amateur plumbers often think "steeper slope = better drainage." In drainage piping, excessive slope (> 1/2" per foot) is dangerous: liquid drains away at high velocity, leaving behind heavy solids, and more critically, causes the total drop to exceed the pipe diameter over very short distances, triggering self-siphonage.

An S-trap turns downward vertically into the floor with no vent connection. When a basin drains, the falling column of water in the vertical drop acts as a full siphon, pulling the water plug straight out of the trap and leaving an open airway for sewer gas.

Can I install an Air Admittance Valve (AAV / Studor Vent) on an island sink?

Yes! Under IPC (and local code approval under UPC), an engineered AAV can be installed on island sink trap arms where venting through the roof is physically impossible. The AAV must be installed at least 4" above the horizontal trap arm and remain in an accessible ventilated space.

What is the "crown weir" of a P-trap?

The crown weir is the lowest point on the inside upper curve of the trap outlet. It dictates the resting water level of the trap seal.

Can I put two 90-degree elbows on a horizontal trap arm?

No! Under UPC Section 1002.3, the total change in direction of a horizontal trap arm between the trap weir and vent fitting must not exceed 90 degrees (or one 90° elbow). Two 90s create an illegal "flat vent" condition that accumulates hair and grease.
