How Roof Pitch, Angle, and Multipliers Relate
In US construction, roof pitch is designated as inches of vertical rise per 12 inches of horizontal run (e.g. 6/12 means 6 inches of rise for every 1 foot of horizontal run).
Slope Angle (Degrees) = arctan(Rise / 12) × (180 / π)
Pitch Multiplier = √(Rise² + 12²) / 12
True Sloped Roof Area = Flat Footprint Area × Pitch Multiplier
A steep 12/12 roof (45 degrees) has a multiplier of 1.414, meaning the roof surface has 41.4% more square footage than the building's flat ground footprint.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the pitch multiplier for a 6/12 roof?
The multiplier is 1.118. A 2,000 sq ft flat house footprint with a 6/12 pitch has 2,236 sq ft of actual sloped roof deck.
What is considered a walkable roof pitch?
Pitches up to 6/12 (~26.6°) are generally walkable with rubber-soled work boots. Pitches 7/12 to 8/12 require extra caution, and 9/12+ requires roof brackets, toe boards, and safety harnesses.
How do you measure roof pitch with a smartphone level?
Lay a straight 2-foot level or 2x4 against the sloped roof under the eave, rest your smartphone level on it to read degrees, then match the degree reading to the pitch chart.
