The #1 Cause of Retaining Wall Failure: Water Pressure
Retaining walls rarely fail because of the weight of the soil behind them. Over 90% of retaining wall collapses occur due to hydrostatic water pressure. When soil becomes saturated with rain, water adds tremendous lateral hydraulic thrust that pushes blocks forward and blows out the wall foundation.
The Mandatory Drainage Anatomy
Every long-lasting segmental retaining wall must incorporate three non-negotiable drainage elements:
- Crushed Clean Gravel (#57 Stone): A 12-inch wide vertical chimney of washed, open-graded gravel placed immediately behind the rear of the blocks so water drops instantly to the footing.
- Perforated 4" Drain Pipe: Slotted drain pipe placed at the bottom of the gravel chimney, pitched to daylight so trapped water discharges safely.
- Non-Woven Filter Fabric: Separates the natural clay/topsoil from the drainage gravel to prevent microscopic silt from clogging the stone pores over time.
The 4-Foot Height Rule
Most municipal building codes allow DIY homeowners to build unreinforced gravity walls up to 4 feet in total height (including the buried base course). Walls exceeding 4 feet require structural engineering, soil tiebacks, and horizontal geogrid reinforcement mesh.
