When soil becomes saturated with rain, water adds tremendous lateral hydraulic thrust that pushes blocks forward and blows out the wall foundation.

The Mandatory Drainage Anatomy

Every long-lasting segmental retaining wall must incorporate three non-negotiable drainage elements:

Why must the first course of retaining wall blocks be buried below ground?

Burying the first course (at least 6 inches) locks the toe of the wall into the earth, preventing lateral sliding and soil blowout beneath the wall foundation.

Can I use dirt or pea gravel to backfill a retaining wall?

Never use native dirt, clay, or smooth pea gravel. Dirt absorbs water and swells with immense pressure. Round pea gravel rolls like ball bearings under compaction. Always use angular crushed angular stone (#57 washed gravel, 1/2" to 3/4") that interlocks into a firm, free-draining wedge.

What should I put in the trench beneath the first row of blocks?

Tamp 4 to 6 inches of compacted angular crushed stone with fines (often called road base or 21A crusher run). Level this base gravel meticulously; any 1/8" error in the base row magnifies into noticeable crooked gaps by the top course.
