Why Retaining Walls Fail

Over 90% of retaining wall collapses are not caused by soil weight—they are caused by hydrostatic water pressure trapped behind the wall. When rainwater saturates clay backfill, water weight presses against the wall like a dam, blowing out the blocks.

Three Mandatory Rules of Retaining Wall Construction

  1. Bury the First Course: For every 1 foot of wall height, bury 1 inch of block (or at minimum 1 full course) beneath finish grade to prevent forward toe kickout.
  2. 12" Clean Angular Gravel Chimney: Never backfill native soil directly against the back of blocks. Install a 12-inch column of 3/4" washed clear gravel wrapped in geotextile fabric.
  3. Perforated Toe Drain Pipe: Place a 4-inch perforated drain pipe (holes facing down) at the bottom of the gravel bed sloped to daylight.

The Critical 4-Foot Geogrid Threshold

Gravity walls rely strictly on block weight and setback angle to hold soil. Building codes strictly mandate that walls exceeding 4 feet in height require biaxial geogrid reinforcement layered into the compacted backfill soil mass, or an engineered stamp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why must the perforated pipe holes face downward?

Water enters from the bottom as the water table rises into the trench. Facing the holes down allows water to enter the pipe and drain away before pooling high enough to saturate the base gravel.

How much cutting waste should I add for curved walls?

For straight walls, a 5% waste allowance is sufficient. For curved serpentine walls, splitting the rear breakaway wings off modular blocks requires a 10% to 12% order waste factor.

What is the base trench requirement?

Excavate a trench twice the width of the block and 6 inches deeper than the buried course. Compact 6 inches of crushed dense road base gravel (crusher run), perfectly level from side to side and front to back.
