Why must vinyl siding nails not be driven tight against the wall?

Vinyl siding expands and contracts significantly as outdoor temperatures swing between winter freezes and summer heat. Nails must be driven through the center of the pre-punched slots with a 1/32" to 1/16" gap (about the thickness of a dime) between the nail head and the vinyl panel, allowing the siding to slide smoothly without buckling or warping.
