How Ion-Exchange Water Softeners Work
Hard water contains dissolved divalent mineral ions, primarily Calcium ($Ca^{2+}$) and Magnesium ($Mg^{2+}$). Inside the softener mineral tank, tiny spherical polystyrene beads (cation resin) are pre-loaded with sodium ($Na^+$) or potassium ($K^+$) ions. As hard water filters through, the high-affinity calcium and magnesium ions displace the sodium ions into the water, stripping out hardness.
Calculating Compensated Hardness
If your water contains dissolved ferrous (clear-water) iron or manganese, it competes aggressively with calcium for resin exchange sites and fouls the resin if not accounted for:
Compensated Hardness = Raw GPG + (Iron_PPM × 5) + (Manganese_PPM × 5)
Daily Grain Load = People × 75 Gallons/Day × Compensated Hardness
Operating Capacity Needed = Daily Grain Load × 7 Days / (1 - 0.15 Reserve)
Why You Should Never Buy an Oversized Softener
Bigger is not always better with water softeners. If you buy a massive 64,000 grain unit for a 2-person home with moderate hardness, the resin may only regenerate once every 18 to 25 days. Resins left un-regenerated for more than 10 to 12 days suffer from bacterial colonization, iron oxidation fouling, and channeling. Modern metered demand valves perform best when sized for a 6 to 8 day regeneration cycle.

1 Grain Per Gallon (GPG) equals exactly 17.1 Parts Per Million (PPM or mg/L) of calcium carbonate equivalent. For example, water with 342 PPM hardness is 20 GPG (very hard).
Can a water softener remove red rust iron?
A standard water softener can only remove clear-water (dissolved ferrous) iron. It CANNOT effectively remove red-water (ferric) oxidized iron, colloidal iron, or iron bacteria, which require an air-injection iron filter or sediment filter ahead of the softener.
