How DOTS & Wilks Normalize Powerlifting Strength
In powerlifting, absolute weight lifted is biased toward heavier athletes because muscle cross-sectional area and body leverage scale with size. However, simply dividing total weight by bodyweight is unfair to super-heavyweights due to allometric scaling laws (muscle strength scales with cross-sectional area L², while body mass scales with volume L³).
To crown "Best Overall Lifter" across all weight classes, federations utilize mathematical polynomial coefficients.
The DOTS Formula
Created by Tim Konertz and adopted by USA Powerlifting (USAPL), WRPF, and other major federations, the DOTS formula uses a 4th-degree polynomial that balances lighter and heavier weight classes more fairly than legacy equations:

The Wilks Formula (Classic)
Formulated by Robert Wilks for the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) in 1997, the classic Wilks formula uses a 5th-degree polynomial:
While Wilks was the global gold standard for over two decades, it slightly favored middleweight lifters (75kg–90kg) and penalized very light and super-heavyweight lifters. DOTS was developed to resolve these curve discrepancies.

What is considered a good DOTS score in powerlifting?
A DOTS score of 300 represents a strong solid gym lifter. A score of 380+ indicates an advanced competitive lifter who qualifies for regional championships. A score of 440+ is national-level elite, while 500+ is world-class champion territory.
Why did USAPL switch from Wilks to DOTS?
Statistical analysis of tens of thousands of competition lifts revealed that the Wilks polynomial systematically under-rewarded lifters under 60 kg and over 120 kg. The DOTS formula provides a flatter, more equitable distribution across all weight categories.
Does it matter whether I calculate in pounds (lbs) or kilograms (kg)?
Both DOTS and Wilks polynomial coefficients are mathematically derived using bodyweight and total lift in kilograms.
